 TREES

Significant Benefits Provided By Trees

Trees provide a number of important benefits. This includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Take in carbon dioxide from the air and release oxygen – a significant benefit for mankind!
  • Prevent soil erosion
  • Clean the groundwater
  • Provide shade
  • Serve as wind breaks, and
  • Provide food and shelter for wildlife.

In addition to these important benefits, trees also beautify landscapes and remind us of the importance of nature in our lives!

Benefits of Popular Landscape Trees

Thousands of different types of trees exist, each with their own unique ‘personality’ and other benefits. Below we describe a few of the more popular trees that grow in yards and parks throughout the United States.

RED MAPLE

The RED MAPLE is considered to be intelligent and a perfectionist. Its name is descriptive of the beautiful red color it displays in each season – red foliage in the Fall, red buds in the Winter, red flowers in the Spring, and red leaf stalks in the Summer. In addition the Red Maple is a hardy tree that can adapt and thrive in a variety of soil conditions and climates - from as far North as Canada to as far South as Florida! Rabbits and deer frequently enjoy the Red Maple leaves and squirrels love the fruit it produces!

KATSURA

Katsura has small, heart-shaped leaves that are said to give off the smell of burnt sugar or a toffee-like aroma on warm days in fall.

MAGNOLIA

Deciduous tree with brilliant ruby-red 20-cm flowers. It thrives in every soil type and has sturdy upright growth.

HEMLOCK

A large tree, it usually grows 30 to 50 metres tall. It has a rather narrow crown and conspicuously drooping new growth at the top of the tree. It has mostly down-sweeping branches and delicate feathery foliage.

PINE

Pine is a highly adaptable tree that can grow in all sorts of environments, from water-logged bogs to dry sandy soils.

HYDRANGEA

With immense flower heads, hydrangeas flaunt an old-fashioned charm that is hard to resist. Unrivaled in the shrub world for beautiful flowers, the elegant ladies are easy to cultivate, tolerate almost any soil, and produce abundant blooms. Colors beguile with clear blue, vibrant pink, frosty white, lavender, and rose blossoms—sometimes all blooming on the same plant!

Most hydrangeas thrive in rich, porous, somewhat moist soils. Add compost to enrich poor soil.
