FAQ -Outdoor Living Urn

Is Spring a good time to plant?

Absolutely! Spring is one of the best times to plant a tree or shrub with The Living Urn

Do I need to use all of the cremated remains? Or, can I just use a portion of the cremated remains?

The Living Urn is designed to hold as much or as little of the cremated remains as desired.  We make it large enough to accommodate all the remains as well as the key additives and the tree.  However, if you want to use only a small amount that will work perfectly too. Some customers prefer to use all of the cremated remains in The Living Urn but many choose to use only a portion so they can keep some with them.  Also, we have many customers that split the cremated remains among siblings and buy several Living Urns so each sibling can grow a memory tree for themselves – this has become very popular!

I have cremated remains here at home that are several years old and I was thinking about using The Living Urn with them. Can I use The Living Urn with old cremated remains?

Yes, absolutely!  It doesn’t matter how long you have had the cremated remains.  You can use The Living Urn with new or old cremated remains.

I want to use The Living Urn at my home but what if I move?

Many of our customers plant their tree in a pot so they can transplant it later wherever they settle.  Just make sure the pot is at least 16” tall and 12” wide.

Another option is to use a portion of the ashes with The Living Urn at your current location and also keep some with you.  This way if you move you can simply purchase another Living Urn and plant a new tree with the remaining ashes at your new location.

A third option is to order The Living Urn Indoors, and grow a living memory indoors or on a patio!

Can I plant in a pot?

While many of our customers plant in the ground, we also have a large number that plant in a pot.  Be sure to get a large enough pot (at least 16” tall and 12” wide) and use plenty of soil.

Is the Living Urn all natural and environmentally friendly?

Yes, Bio Urns are made entirely from plant waste and cellulose. The Bio Urn is all natural and there are no glues or toxic materials added to the process to build our product. Instead we rely on a combination of wetting and drying our materials and applying pressure to form our Bio Urn. All of our products are handmade and do not involve machinery or chemicals providing us with a very modest carbon footprint.

Our boxes, or outer shells, are handmade from 100% all natural bamboo, which is a sustainable material.

We pride ourselves in using only environmentally friendly and all natural materials in our urn, additives and outer shell packaging.

Does The Living Urn or any of its components have an expiration date?

The bio urn does not have a shelf life if it's stored in a dry place.

The outer bamboo shell is beautiful - what is this used for?

While the Living Urn itself is more than sufficient to hold and store the cremated remains of a loved one, the outer bamboo shell can be used to hold our Bio Urn filled with cremated remains when you transport the remains or while you store the remains at your home waiting for your tree seedling to arrive. This provides an attractive and dignified solution to hold and store the cremated remains of your loved one.

After you plant your Living Urn, you can use the beautiful bamboo shell as a special container to store small possessions of your loved one, as a flower pot in the garden, or anything else that you can think of!

Why is it better to grow a memory tree from a young tree instead of a seed?

Growing a memory tree from a young tree is simple and easy and has a much higher success rate compared to trying to grow a tree from a seed or tiny sapling. First off, germination failure rates with seeds can be very high. Also, some species of seeds may require special treatment to assist with germination and this can be cumbersome and difficult. In addition, even if you are lucky enough to achieve successful early germination with a seed, surviving natural environmental factors such as weather, temperature, and other conditions such as wildlife can be a challenge.

We want the experience of growing a memorial tree from the ashes of a loved one to be a simple, easy and enjoyable experience for you and your family. We also want to be sure a beautiful, healthy and vibrant tree grows from the remains to honor your loved one. Therefore, our unique, proprietary growing system is designed to integrate young trees, not seeds or tiny saplings where failure rates are high. For this reason, we provide our customers with the very best, premium trees to ensure your loved one is memorialized in the right way and in a manner that they deserve.
